Strategic Mid-term Review of Fairtrade Africa strategy 2021-2025
Client: Fair Trade Africa
Region: Africa

Project description

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is an independent non-profit umbrella organisation whose members are African Producer Organisations certified against Fairtrade Standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cotton, bananas etc. Their vision includes a world in which all producers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfil their potential and decide on their future. Fairtrade Africa halfway the implementation of it five-years strategy, commissioned a strategic review. An evaluation was conducted combining desk review and online surveys with farmers, and Key informant interviews with a range of stakeholder groups in eight countries. Outcome harvesting was used in addition to map out outcome results and the contribution of FTA to outcome level changes.

Project Scope:

The Mid Term Review included the four regions that FTA works in namely North Africa, East Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. Eight countries were included in the field work plan and data was collected by local consultants in each of the eight countries. The five-year strategic plan that was evaluated, runs from 2021 till 2025.

Result:

Fairtrade Africa’s (FTA) strategic review highlights growth in producer organizations, product sales, and premium generation. However, key challenges include climate change, digital disruption, market dynamics, and weak governance structures in producer organizations. Recommendations include emphasizing climate-smart practices, expanding e-commerce partnerships, improving governance, and leveraging partnerships for impact. FTA’s focus on sustainable farming, advocacy, and product diversification will be enhanced by building capacities, prioritizing market access, and increasing policy advocacy. Implementing these recommendations will help FTA address emerging challenges, expand market access, and strengthen sustainability, positioning it for greater success in promoting fair trade across Africa.
